Lithuania: Vilnius Cup Results

On 10-12 January 2013, Sportima Arena welcomed the 7th Annual Vilnius Cup Tournament: 12 teams in U-15 age group and 4 teams in U-12 age group. How competitive the teams were is evident from the fact that even seven games ended with a single point difference. The winner of one game was decided by drawing of lots..

The third place winner in the U-12 age group was Kaunas Lituanica with a 7:4 victory over Estonian Kiili Panthers. In the Finals, Vilnius Sporto Vilkai beat Sank Petersburgh National Team 4:0. The MVP award went to Povilas Grigas (Vilnius Sporto Vilkai). The teams received medals, cups, personal prizes and sweets.

In U-15 age group, two teams – Moscow Balashihkha and Kaunas Lituanica – met for a tough third place game which ended in a tie. To break the tie, the teams had two extra innings which eventually brought luck to the Muscovites.

The Finals saw the regular competitors of the tournament – Vilnius Sporto Vilkai and Brest Zubryj 1. Vilnius team pulled off the victory with a score 1:0. The MVP award was granted to Marius Balandis (Vilnius Sporto Vilkai) with his pitch speed of 80 mph adding to the success of his team. The teams of the tournament were presented medals, cups, and special prizes. The best players were granted baseball bats, and all the participants enjoyed the Lithuanian sweets.

Lithuania: Kaunas Lituanica Wins Interleague Championship for 7th Time

Baseball in Lithuania for the 2010 Summer Season ended in Vilnius with the “Interleague Championship” Finals. In its 8th year of competition, the Interleague is a championship between top-level teams from Belarus, Latvia, and Lithuanian Leagues.

In the match for 3rd place, the home team Vilnius “Sporto Vilkai” won 10-8 over the visitors from Belarus Skidelis “Sugar Storm”.

In the championship match, Lithuanian 2010 Champion Kaunas “Lituanica” squared off against Brest “Zubry”, who also won the Belarussian Championship this season. Brest moved ahead in the first inning of the match 1-0, but Kaunas tipped the scales and won by a final score of 4-2. Will Gordon recorded the win for Kaunas, pitching 7 innings before being relieved by Marijus Dargis.

“Lituanica” won the Interleague for the seventh time in its history. “Zubry” won Interleague ‘Silver’ for the first time in their team’s history.

Two Kaunas players were awarded individual prizes. The finals MVP went to Will Gordon, and Best Hitter in the tournament was Marijus Dargis (photos at right). Best Pitcher went to Andrej Losj of “Zubry”.

Lithuanian Baseball Team Completes USA Tour


SWITZERLAND – The top Lithuanian baseball players have now traveled to the heartland of America for a 16 day tour to ramp up their game. The players are part of Club team Kaunas Lituanica that is part of the nation’s top group of players forming the Lithuanian Baseball League.

The team brought their ‘pirstines’ and ‘lazdos’ (baseball gloves and bats) ready to sink into some intense matches comprising a seven game schedule against local summer amateur baseball teams. They are on a learning curve to glean all they can to up their game skills.

The objective of the tour is formation training for the younger players and for the team to learn more about the game after their disappointing 3rd place finish in 2008 league play. The Kaunas Lituanica’s goal is to aim towards winning the Lithuanian Baseball League title in 2009.

The main objective is to take Lithuanian baseball to the Olympics one day.Kaunas Lituanica players learning from the Detroit Tigers. Having baseball back on the Olympic program is crucial for many countries for funding and training purposes.

Lithuania is targeting young player development as the priority for future of the game in Lithuania and throughout the European continent.

Already two players on the US Tour have caught the attention of MLB scouts, 17 year old pitcher and outfielder Edvardus Matusevicius and 16 year old pitcher Dovydas Neverauskas, and they have been invited to Major League Baseball’s European Academy taking place in August in Italy.

The father of Matusevicius, Edmuntas, is the General Secretary of the Lithuanian Baseball Association and is overseeing the tour.

MLB Scouting Bureau staff recently ran 80 tryout and selection sessions evaluating over 250 of the top promising European players as part of their grassroots program.

US TOUR

The kick off of the tour was a visit to study the Major League Baseball teams of the Chicago White Sox and the Detroit Tigers head off at Chicago’s US Cellular Field.

Strong competition hit them to up their game and they fell 11-0 in their first game against the Chicago Wildcats a league considered by many as one of the best amateur leagues in the US.

Tony Huntley of the Wildcats commented on the potential of the younger players and the fact that they hung into the game in spite of the high score.
