Iraqi Baseball Team Visits United States

IRAQ – The Iraqi national baseball team recently concluded a 10-day visit to the United States. The 17-memeber entourage from Maysan, Diwaniya, and Baghdad travelled to the United States from May 3 to 13 as part of a sports diplomacy program funded by the U.S. Department of State’s SportsUnited office.

The 12 athletes and the five coaches participated in skills clinics, watched a game at Camden Yards, and met All-Star Ken Griffey Jr. Also, as part of its outreach and development, Major League Baseball (MLB) donated 27 boxes of bats, helmets, balls, rule books and other equipment to the Iraqi players.

The trip also included some other interesting activities. The delegation met the baseball team at Fairmont Heights High School (Seat Pleasant, Md.), attended a high school prom. and visisted several monuments in Washington.

Prior to their trip to the United States, The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad hosted the Iraqi coaches and players on March 31. After an embassy luncheon, the Iraqi baseball and softball players practiced with Embassy staff who share their love of the game. Events such as this help fulfillthe goal of cultural cooperation envisaged in the U.S.-Iraqi Strategic Framework Agreement and reaffirm the U.S. commitment to building long-lasting ties in culture and sports between the Iraqi and American peoples.
