Germany: Stuttgart Reds Keep Lead in South Division


This past weekend in the German Bundesliga South Division the Stuttgart Reds held onto the top spot with a weekend sweep over the Bad Homburg Hornets. With the wins they hold a half game lead over three teams. All three teams tied for second place swept their weekend series as well.

The Reds took care of the Hornets 12-6 in Game 1 coming back after trailing 4-0 after two innings. Hagen Ratz settled down and allowed only one more run over the next four innings as the Reds bats came alive. The game was tied 6-6 going into the eleventh inning when the Reds exploded for six more runs to pick up the win.

The Reds pounded out 16 hits and walked eight times against Hornets pitching. Both Xavier Gonzalez (3-for-5) and Quinn Tiernan (3-for-6) led the way with three hits apiece. Marcel Hering pitched five innings in relief to pick up the win.

Game 2 was a close one as well as once again the Hornets jumped out early to a 2-0 lead. Xavier Gonzalez again had three hits in the contest as did Gavin Ng (3-for-5) who also stole two bases. David Rider pitched well to earn the victory going seven strong allowing just two runs, one earned.

The Reds (7-2) will face off with Heidenheim (9-3) the weekend after next. This series will start to possibly help separate the division leaders from the rest of the pack. Mainz will have the weekend off while Regensburg will play Mannheim.

Germany: Solingen Starts Strong in Title Defense


The German Bundesliga is off and running now two weeks into the season. So far there are three teams that remain undefeated with the perennial powers still going strong.

North Division:

In the North, defending champion Solingen is at it again starting off with a 4-0 record. After an opening weekend sweep of Dortmund, the Alligators came back this past weekend to sweep Paderborn. They lead the league along with the Bonn Capitals who also sit at 4-0.

Solingen will host Hannover this coming weekend. Hannover sits at 2-2 tied for third early on with Dortmund.

Solingen is winning at the plate so far in the early season. They lead the division in home runs (3), runs (25), walks (16), and average hitting a stout .418 so far. Bonn is right behind them in many of those categories hitting a strong .390 so far in the early going.

On the other hand Hamburg has struggled at the plate. They have yet to score a run in four games and are hitting just .078. They also lead the league in strikeouts with 25.

South Division:

Regensburg is once again at the top of the standings as the only undefeated team so far in the South. Heidenheim is right behind them and will continue to challenge them all season. Heidenheim dropped their first game of the year against Mainz, but has since righted the ship and sits at 3-1.

We are two weeks away from the first meeting between Regensburg and Heidenheim.
