Unipol Bologna Wins 2013 European Champions Cup

Unipol Bologna has defended its European Champions Cup title after defeating Telemarket Rimini 2-1 in Game 2 of the best-of-three series. It is their second title in a row and third in the past four years.

Unipol Bologna 2, Telemarket Rimini 1

Box Score

Both starters pitched great for their respective teams. Bologna starter Matteo D’Angelo tossed 7.1 innings allowing just one run. He gave up six hits, walked three, and struck out four. However, he didn’t factor into the decision.

Rimini got a run in the bottom of the first inning and held that lead until the ninth inning. After a walk and a double play, Rimini got a small rally going when Maro Chiarini (0-for-2/2 BBs) walked to put a runner on. Alexander Romero (1-for-3) then worked the count into his favor before getting a pitch he could handle doubling in Chiarini to put Rimini on top 1-0.

That is where the scored stood for the next seven innings. Then Bologna struck back in the top of the ninth.

Juan Carlos Infante (2-for-4) led off the inning and worked the count full when he tied the game up with a solo home run to right field. That would be all for Rimini starter Bazardo.

Yorman Bazardo pitched great for Rimini tossing eight innings allowing just a single run. He gave up five hits, walked one, and struck out six but couldn’t hold onto the one run lead he was staked with early on.

After Bazardo was relieved by Carlos Pezzullo, Bologna kept the heat on. Pezzullo got two quick outs and then allowed a single to Rosario Reyes(1-for-4). After a second straight single from Claudio Liverziani (1-for-4), Pezzullo was pulled in favor of Roberto Corradini.

It looked like Corradini might close it out and send the game to extra innings when he started off Luca Bischeri (2-for-4) with an 0-2 count. But it wasn’t to be as Bischeri singled in the go-ahead run scoring Reyes from third.

Nicholas Pugliese came on for Bologna in the bottom of the ninth to close out the game and finish off their title defense.

Pezzullo took the loss for Rimini after pitching just 0.2 innings. Junior Oberto picked up the win for Bologna finishing off the eighth inning tossing 0.2 innings.

Juan Carlos Infante was named the MVP.

Unipol Bologna Dominates First Game of 2013 European Champions Cup

The 2013 European Champions Cup began Thursday night in Bologna, Italy. The two Italian powers Unipol Bologna and Telemarket Rimini are battling it out for the title. A year ago Bologna defeated Nettuno for the title and are looking to repeat.

They got off to a good start too.

Telemarket Rimini 0, Unipol Bologna 10 (7)

Box Score

Raul Rivero tossed seven shutout innings giving up just one hit. He walked two and struck out nine to earn the win for Bologna. As he dominated on the hill, the Bologna bats were doing the same at the plate.

Bologna got off to a quick start scoring a pair of runs in the first inning. They loaded the bases with no outs in the first and then got two runs. The first came on a fielder’s choice and a throwing error. The second run came off a Luca Bischeri (1-for-2) RBI single.

Unipol Bologna tacked on another run in the second inning on a Juan Carlos Infante (1-for-2/3 BBs) solo home run. They got another run in the fourth on another solo home run. This time it was Marco Sabbatani (1-for-2) who went deep.

The scored remained at 4-0 until the bottom of the seventh inning when Bologna exploded for six runs to end the game in the seventh due to the run-rule. But they scored six runs without getting a single hit.

The Rimini pitching staff imploded during the inning. Two different pitchers in the inning combined to walk seven batters and hit two others. Five of the six runs that were scored, scored on either a bases loaded walk or a bases loaded hit-by-pitch. The other came on a sacrifice fly.

In total, Rimini walked 12 batters and hit three others. It was a total meltdown after Enorbel Marquez-Ramirez left the game after four innings. He took the loss giving up four runs (two earned) on five hits.

The series moves to Rimini Friday and Saturday if necessary.

EC Regensburg: Unipol Bologna Caps Off Championship with Walk Off Win

Unipol Bologna used a bottom of the ninth rally to make a comeback and win the European Cup in Regensburg, Germany on Sunday. Bologna defeated fellow Italian Baseball League team T&A San Marino 7-6 with a walk off single by Alessandro Vaglio (4-for-5) to earn a trip to the European Cup Final in August.

Unipol Bologna didn’t get a great start out of Matteo D’Angelo who lasted just 2.1 innings giving up four runs on five hits. With the walk off, reliever Nicholas Pugliese picked up the win tossing just 0.2 innings.

Unipol Bologna fought back several times after trailing 4-0 early in the game. San Marino jumped out early with three runs in the top of the first all on a Jaro Ramos (1-for-3) three-run home run. Bologna slowly came back and finally took the lead in the bottom of the seventh with two runs to take a 5-4 lead only to see it slip away an inning later.

Bologna gave up its only unearned run in the top of the ninth inning and it looked like San Marino would claim the championship. However, Bologna came back strong in the bottom of the ninth.

Nicholas Nosti (2-for-4/3 stolen bases) led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a single and then quickly stole second base for Bologna. After a walk to Claudio Liverziani (0-for-4) walked, Chris Aguila (2-for-4) singled to tie the game. Daniele Malengo, who pinch-ran earlier, was then intentionally walked to load the bases and set up the double play. However, that backfired for San Marino as the next hitter, Alessandro Vaglio singled on a 1-1 count to win the game and championship for Bologna.

The win capped off a perfect tournament for Unipol Bolona who went 5-0 in the round robin play.

EC Regensburg: Unipol Bologna Squeaks by the Eagles Prague to Stay Unbeaten

Day 3 wrapped up on Thursday with Unipol Bologna leading the pack with a perfect record through the first three games setting them up for the inside track into the European Cup Regensburg Championship Game. Anything can happen though as we still have two games of pool play left to go.

Unipol Bologna scored a late run to take one from the Eagles Prague on Thursday to stay undefeated. Both L&D Amsterdam, who crushed Bern, and the Buchbinder Legionaere, who needed 10 innings to down T&A San Marino, both got big wins on Thursday to stay in the race for the championship game.

Unipol Bologna 2, Eagles Prague 1

Hard luck loser David Barta pitched well for Prague. He gave up only two runs (one unearned) on seven hits. His defense let him down in the third inning committing three errors and allowing in an unearned run that would wind up being the difference. Barta didn’t help himself by walking seven in the loss though.

Carlos Richetti pitched well for Bologna but didn’t factor into the decision. He went seven innings allowing just one run on three hits while striking out nine. Fabio Milano picked up the win with 1.1 innings of relief without allowing a hit. Nicholas Pugliese picked up his second save of the tournament by getting the final two outs.

The game was tied 1-1 heading into the ninth inning. In the top half of the inning, Bologna staged a two out rally that would give them the win escaping the upset. Claudio Liverziani (1-for-3) doubled with two outs on a full count. He was driven home by Chris Aguila (2-for-5) and that would be all Bologna would need.

Bern Cardinals 1, L&D Amsterdam Pirates 16 (6)

Game 2 was much different than the first of the day. Amsterdam came out swinging scoring an eight spot in the third inning and never looked back. They would score two more in the fourth and end the game early with another six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Wesley Connor hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning after taking over defensively in the top of the inning.. He would finish the game 2-for-2 with three RBI. Bas De Jong added a double, two hits, and three runs scored.

Every starter but one, who was taken out early, had a hit in the game as the Pirates churned out 14 hits to go with the 16 runs.

Jos De Jong tossed five innings giving up just one run on two hits to pick up the win for Amsterdam. Tobias Imboden took the loss for Bern going four innings giving up 10 runs but only three were earned. Four errors by the Cardinals led to seven unearned runs.

T&A San Marino 6, Buchbinder Legionaere 7 (10)

The Legionaere needed a pair of runs in the bottom of the tenth inning to pull out the win over San Marino on Thursday. Both teams entered the game at 1-1 and needed the win. The host team needed to come back twice including being down 4-0 after half an inning.

Justin Kuehn needed 171 pitches to get through 9.1 innings but didn’t get the win. Jonathan Eisenhuth picked up the win pitching just 0.2 innings in relief.

Both teams had errors that led to runs for the other squad. San Marino gave up five unearned runs committing three errors in the game including two in the bottom of the tenth inning.

EC Regensburg: Unipol Bologna Leads Standings After Day 2

Day 2 of the European Cup in Regensburg is in the books. There wasn’t a close game all day as one game didn’t last the full nine and a team from Italy improved to 2-0 to lead the standings.

Game one featured the Bern Cardinals and the Eagles Prague. Both teams came into the game having lost their first game and needed to get on the winning path.

Bern Cardinals 4, Eagles Prague 12

Bern started off strong scoring three runs in the top of the first inning and even picked up another run in the top of the second. Things were looking good, but that was all they would get. The Eagles took the lead in the bottom of the first scoring four runs of their own and never looked back taking advantage of five Bern errors to score six unearned runs.

Daniel Vitek started off slow giving up four runs in two innings, but then shut down the Cardinals for six more innings to earn the win for Prague. He got some offensive support from Matej Hejma who had a nice day at the plate. Hejma scored three runs, drove in four more, and collected a pair of hits going 2-for-4 including a two-run home run. He also stole a pair of bases.

Helping out Hejma offensively was third baseman Lukas Borecky who added three hits of his own (3-for-4), scored three runs, and stole two bases.

Patrick Lawson took the loss for Bern pitching just 3.2 innings allowing nine runs (six earned) on just five hits. He struggled with control walking six batters and unleashing five wild pitches. He also hit two batters.

T&A San Marino 4, Unipol Bologna 14 (8)

Roger Luque got some much needed run support to pick up the win for Unipol Bologna as they improved their record to 2-0. Luque went 5.2 innings allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits en route to the win.

Juan Carlos Infante had the big blow for Bologna with a three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The game was close through seven innings with Bologna leading 5-4. They would score nine runs in the bottom of the eighth to end the game early. Two San Marino pitchers failed to record an out giving up big run totals in the eighth inning.

L&D Amsterdam Pirates 9, Buchbinder Legionaere 1

Amsterdam busted out of the gates scoring three runs in the first two innings and cruised from there giving up just five hits and taking advantage of six Legionaere errors.

EC Regensburg: Unipol Bologna Needs 10 Innings to Down L&D Amsterdam

The European Cup kicked off today in both Barcelona, Spain and Regensburg, Germany. Twelve teams are competing to earn one of the births in the European Champions Cup finals later in the year.

In Regensburg, the six teams competing are:

Bern Cardinals (SUI)
Buchbinder Legionaere – host team (GER)
Eagles Prague (CZE)
Unipol Bologna (ITA)
T&A San Marino (SMA)
L&D Amsterdam Pirates (NED)

Day 1 Recap:

Unipol Bologna 4, L&D Amsterdam 3 (10)

Both teams got great outings from their starting pitchers but neither factored into the decision. Rob Cordemans went seven innings allowing just one run on three hits for the Pirates. His counterpart from Bologna, Raul Rivero, pitched just as well. Rivero went seven innings as well giving up just one run on five hits.

However it would be up to the bullpens to decide the game. Unipol Bologna’s bullpen didn’t give up a hit despite giving up two unearned runs. Matteo D’Angelo picked up the win pitching two innings. Nicholas Pugliese got the save with an inning of work.

The game was tied 1-1 as it moved into extra innings. With the tie breaking rules in effect, Bologna scored three runs in the top of the tenth inning. Runners were placed on first and second and the first batter for Bologna sacrificed them over. After an intentional walk to Nicholas Nosti (1-for-2), Juan Carlos Infante (0-for-3/2 RBI) worked a five pitch walk to drive in the second run of the game for Bologna.

The big blow came two batters later when Claudio Liverziani (1-for-4/2 RBI) came through with a two-run  single to put Unipol Bologna up 4-1.

L&D Amsterdam tried to rally in their half of the inning. After the lead off batter loaded the bases when he reached on a fielder’s choice, Jesse Aussems (0-for-1) pinch hit grounding out to second base but driving in a run. With two outs, Pugliese uncorked a wild pitch scoring a second run in the inning for the Pirates and putting the tying run just 90 feet away. However, Pugliese got Rashid Gerard (0-for-4) to strike out swinging to end the game.

Eagles Prague 3, T&A San Marino 8

T&A San Marino entered the European Cup in Regensburg playing .500 ball in their last 10 games in Italy, so they were looking to get off on the right foot. Unfortunately for the Eagles Prague, they did just that.

San Marino pounded the Eagles starter, Bradley Merritt, for seven runs in six innings. Merritt didn’t help his cause walking six and hitting two more.

Jaro Ramos scored a pair of runs going 3-for-4 with a walk. Joseph Mazzuca added another pair of runs on a perfect day going 2-for-2 with a walk.

San Marino made the most of its eleven hits picking up eight RBI in the process. But it was a close game into the bottom of the seventh as San Marino led just 3-2. In the bottom of the seventh though, San Marino put the game away.  They would score five runs on four hits in the inning to give them an 8-2 cushion late in the game.

Mattia Reginato (2-for-5) singled in a pair of runs in the seventh and would score four batters later when Lorenzo Avagnina (1-for-3) doubled in two more runs.

Leonardo D’Amico picked up the win in relief tossing 4.2 innings giving up just one unearned run on three hits.

Buchbinder Legionaere 14, Bern Cardinals 8

The Bern Cardinals jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead only to see it slip away in the later innings. The Cardinals offense jumped all over Legionaere starter Sven Schueller who lasted just a third of an inning giving up four runs.

The Cardinals picked up five runs in the top of the first. The scoring was capped off by a Marc Obussier (1-for-4) three-run home run. Bern picked up two more runs in the second inning and things were looking good. Then the offense went into hibernation for six innings.

After the first reliever couldn’t stop the bleeding, the Legionaere called on reliever Wolfgang Reitter to put a halt to the Bern offense. And that is just what he did. Reitter tossed five scoreless innings in relief allowing just two hits and walking three to pick up the win.

The Legionaere started the comeback in the third inning picking up five runs of its own. Christopher Howard (1-for-3) came up with the big hit in the inning, a three-run home run. They would pick up six more runs in the sixth inning to take an 11-7 lead. They continued to add to that lead from then on out.

Philipp Howard had a big day for the Legionaere going 3-for-3 and stealing two bases. Christoph Zirzlmeier doubled and drove in two runs going 3-for-5. Zirzlmeier also scored three runs. Enzo Muschik also had a nice day driving in three runs going 2-for-4 with a double.

EC Barcelona: Pitchers’ Duels Galore on Day One

The European Cup kicked off today in both Barcelona, Spain and Regensburg, Germany. Twelve teams are competing to earn one of the births in the European Champions Cup finals later in the year.

In Barcelona, the six teams competing are:

Paderborn Untouchables (GER)
Telemarket Rimini (ITA)
CB Barcelona (ESP)
Draci Brno (CZE)
Corendon Kinheim (NED)

Day 1 Recap:

Draci Brno 1, Rouen Huskies 0

A pitcher’s duel broke out in the first game in Barcelona as both starters pitched great.

Draci Brno starter Martin Schneider tossed 6.1 scoreless innings allowing just four hits while striking out seven. The two relievers that followed Schneider didn’t allow a hit over the last three innings. Karl Martin Malecek picked up the win allowing only a single walk in 1.2 innings of relief. Radim Chroust picked up the save pitching the final inning.

Rouen starter Owen Ozanich pitched a complete game but took the loss. Over nine innings, Ozanich gave up just a single unearned run on six hits while striking out eleven.

The only run of the game came in the top of the ninth inning as Draci Brno got a two out rally going to plate the only run of the game. After two quick outs, Micahal Ondracek (1-for-3) singled to get the rally going. After a failed pick off attempt, Michael Bren (1-for-4) singled down the right field line moving Ondracek to third base. Then, just when it looked like Ozanich had pitched out of the jam, Zachary Samuels pinch-hit and reached on an error allowing Ondracek to score from third.

Corendon Kinheim 0, Telemarket Rimini 1 (11)

The second game in Barcelona was just as good as the first. Again a pitchers duel, both starters went at least eight innings of scoreless ball.

David Bergman tossed nine shutout innings for Corendon allowing just eight hits. Yorman Bazardo started for Rimini and went eight shutout innings allowing just a single hit while striking out eleven. With the game going extra innings, neither factored into the decision.

Corendon Kinheim couldn’t score a bit in the top of the 10th inning and needed Dirk Van Klooster to throw out James Buccheri at the plate to push the game into the eleventh inning.

Again Corendon went hitless and couldn’t score in the top of the eleventh. Telemarket Rimini would make the most of it in the bottom of the inning. After an intentional walk loaded the bases, Alexander Romero (2-for-5) came up with the walk-off single driving in Riccardo Babini (2-for-4).

CB Barcelona 4, Paderborn Untouchables 2

Barcelona got a great start out of Ricardo Hernandez to pick up the win in their first game of the tournament. Hernandez pitched seven innings allowing just one run on five hits. He walked two and struck out six in picking up the win. Andres Gimeno came in to pitch the final two innings to earn the save.

Leading 1-0 in the top of the eighth inning, Barcelona got the bats going. It all started with a Pau Sancho (2-for-5) one-out double. He quickly scored the tying run when Jesus Golindano (2-for-3) singled him home. After another out and an Angel Angulo (2-for-4) single, Oscar Roman (2-for-4) came through with a big two-out triple.

Paderborn came back with a run in the eighth and a run in the ninth, but it was too little too late. Eugen Heilmann pitched okay for Paderborn but took the loss going all nine innings allowing four runs (three earned) on ten hits.

Jendrick Speer was the only Untouchables hitter with more than a single hit going 2-for-4. He also stole two bases.
