Italy: 2012 European Cup San Marino

SAN MARINO – Defending Italian and Dutch champions T&A San Marino and L&D Amsterdam, respectively, will be the favorites at the 2012 European Cup tournament in San Marino.

The Titans lorded over the IBL last year claiming both the regular season crown and the Italian Series trophy. With a roster filled with a slew of former U.S. minor leaguers, the tourney host will be hard to beat.

The Pirates also put together an electric 2011 campaign, and features a gritty bunch that rarely beats itself. However, the depth of Amsterdam’s bullpen is a concern in a week-long event.

Another team to keep an eye on is Fortitudo Bologna, one of the IBL’s perennial title contenders. Bologna showcases a strong starting rotation that is arguably one of the best in all of European baseball.

Other teams competing in the tournament includes the Paderborn Untouchables (Germany), AVG Draci Brno (Czech Republic) and the Hoboken Pioneers (Belgium).

Netherlands: 2012 European Cup Rotterdam

THE NETHERLANDS – Past history suggests that the 2011 Italian Series runner-up Danesi Nettuno, and last year’s Holland Series bridesmaid DOOR Neptunus, will meet in the title game of the 2012 European Cup tournament at Rotterdam. Don’t bet against it.

The big-budgeted IBL clubs have dominated the European baseball scene in recent years, while no club in Europe has won more games on the old continent over the last three seasons than the Dutch powerhouse.

The national champions of France (Rouen Huskies), Germany (Buchbinder Legionaere), Spain (C.B. Barcelona) and the Czech Republic (Technika Brno) will look to foil the expected championship matchup between Europe’s top two baseball circuits.

Technika Brno dethroned 16-time champion Draci Brno last year, but will be hard-pressed to challenge either Nettuno or Neptunus. However, a trio of squads will be upset-minded.

Regensburg has championship pedigree and a cupboard full of capable hitters. Now, the German champion must prove it can compete on the international stage.

Rouen utilizes a combination of productive native players and talented foreign imports annually to dominate French baseball. Is this the year the Huskies slay Goliath?

Barcelona put together an historic championship run a year ago even though the gigantic FC Barcelona soccer club announced the elimination of its baseball section. Now an independent club, Barcelona has the talent to book a ticket to the European Final Four this coming fall.

2012 EUROPEAN CUP (ROTTERDAM):

WEDNESDAY, MAY 30

2011 European Cup: Unipol Bologna Downs Sant Boi

THE NETHERLANDS – Percy Isenia homered and the L&D Amsterdam Pirates rallied past the Heidenheim Heidekoepfe 7-4 Wednesday at the 2011 European Baseball Cup in Amsterdam.

Heidenheim was held hitless by Amsterdam staff ace Rob Cordemans until the fifth when the German club plated four scores to grab a surprising lead over the Dutch powerhouse. However, Isenia’s two-run blast an inning later ignited a comeback that saw the Pirates score seven unanswered runs over the final four frames to foil the upset bid.

Isenia and Roeland Henrique drove in two runs apiece for the tournament host. Simon Guehring and Robert Gruber tallied an RBI for the Heidekoepfe.

Cordemans (1-0) picked up the decision with seven innings of work, and Jurrian Koks collected the final three outs to earn his first save of the tournament.

UNIPOL BOLOGNA 16, SANT BOI 3
The Italian Baseball League heavyweight capitalized on a whopping 16 walks to claim a lopsided victory over the Spanish champion. Juan Angrisano paced Bologna with three hits, while Joe Mazzuca and Massimillian Sartori added two hits apiece. Edgar Clemente and Livinston Santeniello both walk three times. Juan Manuel Salazar went 4-for-4 for Sant Boi. Jesus Matos (1-0) scattered two unearned runs and three hits over five strong frames.

HOBOKEN PIONEERS 8, NORTH STARS 3
The Belgian champion scored five late unanswered scores to beat the Russian squad. Greg Lambrechts’ go-ahead RBI triple in the sixth broke a 3-3 deadlock, and a two-run double by Dave Herssens highlighted a three-run seventh to seal the victory. Josh Neitz (1-0) went the distance allowing three runs on six hits with seven strikeouts.
