Australia Wins Inaugural U-12 Oceania Baseball Championship

HAGATNA, Guam – Australia, ranked no. 11 in the world, defeated an unranked Guam 18-0 to claim the first ever U-12 Oceania Baseball Championship. The win qualified Australia for the WBSC U-12 Baseball World Cup in 2017 to be played in Tainan, Taiwan this coming July and August.

Guam, American Samoa, and Australia battled it out in a double-elimination tournament played at Guerrero Field in the capital of Guam.

Guam opened the tournament with a surprise win over Australia 11-5. Then later on had Australia on the brink of elimination before losing 10-9 on an extra-inning, walk-off win that forced the winner-take-all final game.

Joining Australia in Taiwan will be Germany and Czech Republic from Europe. Mexico, Nicaragua, Brazil, and the United States qualified from the Americas, while Japan, Chinese Taipei, and Korea will come out of Asia to compete. The final two spots in the tournament are yet to be decided. Africa will have one representative and there will be a wild card to fill.
