That's not a bad idea for a Super League consisting of Dutch and Italian players. But both Spain and Germany have some quality teams and the leagues in France, Czech Republic, Belgium and Sweden also have some talented players. But European baseball is fragmented like minor league baseball in the U.S. and this will never change.

The guys at mister-baseball use a different formula than we do here at BaseballdeWorld but I think they have a very good poll, too.

Thanks to our friend Ray Otero at www.baseballdecuba.com, this site will have 2-3 weekly articles and photos from the Cuban National Series. Linares has retired but I am not sure if he is involved with coaching or not.

The Cubans and the Dominican Republic, and even Puerto Rico, will all field strong teams. Throw in the Americans, Japanese and Koreans and the WBC is poised to become something really special.

I don't think all those superstars realized how special the WBC would be to the fans until it was too late. Those guys from Latin America are playing for national pride and I hope our guys get a little patriotic too. But watch out for Japan and Korea.

There is another European Poll at mister baseball.com that has a wider selection of teams from different countries but I agree with this poll that the leagues in Italy and Holland are by far the best.

It is a stretch to believe these foreign kids will have the mental capacity to play big league-level baseball against professional competition. This isn't basketball and these boys are not seven foot like Akeem Olajuwon. But, hey, it's good marketing and free publicity for the Pirates.

Whatever happened to the big Cuban hitter called Linares or something like that. Is he still playing over there on Fidel's little island paradise?
