SOUTH KOREA - Baseball manager Kim In-sik is aware of the challenges that await him in the year 2009. In addition to trying to get his Korea Baseball Organization club, the Hanwha Eagles, back into the postseason, the 61-year-old will guide the Korean national baseball team in the World Baseball Classic in March.

Kim managed Korea to the surprising semifinal berth at the inaugural WBC three years ago. But the bar has been raised for Korean baseball since it won the gold medal at the Beijing Olympics last year. And when other veteran managers declined to take the WBC job, Kim was summoned once again.

And if he is feeling the pressure - well, actually he is showing it. “I will lose sleep when the tournament nears,” Kim said. “I just know it won’t be an easy job.”

Kim also spoke of the responsibilities of the national team players, and of his plans for the national team.

After a poor performance in the 2006 Classic wrought with a series of problems, manager Luis Sojo took over the reins, smoothed differences and gave rebirth to hope for the Venezuelans.

Sojo controlled a rebellion of a few big leaguers, received a list of 80 candidate players, “revised the list a thousand times,” made a cut to 51 and expects to leave 40 players by January 16 to present the final 28 choices by February 22.

Although he has not wanted to name names, Magglio Ordonez, Miguel Cabrera, Bob Abreu, Johan Santana, Francisco Rodríguez and Carlos Zambrano are being mentioned as an expression of their talent and because Sojo “does not want any weak spots.”

Undeterred, Queensland fought back in the top of the seventh when Ben Simpson beat out a hit to short-stop to be safe at first.

GERMANY - The International Baseball Federation (IBAF) has released the game schedule for the preliminary round of the 2009 Baseball World Cup in Regensburg, Germany. The tournament will open on September 9th with the host nation Germany pitted against China.

Team USA will begin their campaign the following night against South American baseball heavyweight Venezuela. A pair of games are scheduled for both September 11th and 12th.

The Americans, who captured the gold medal at the 2007 World Championship for the third time (1973 and 1974), will open the tourney as the group favorite.

Contrary to past competitions elite players with Major League experience will again participate in international competitions. Altogether, the Americans have won 14 medals at the World Cups.

Venezuela is likely to be a tough opponent as well. The South Americans experienced ‘golden times’ in the 1940s when they won three gold medals (1941, 1944, 1945).

The least experienced of the scheduled opponents for the German national team is likely to be China, who was last present at the World Cup in 2003 and 2005, where they finished in 13th and 11th place, respectively.

Squads will need at least one win to have any chance of advancing to the next round. The teams in each group finishing first and second place, as well as four of the best third place teams, qualify for the second round which takes place in Italy and the Netherlands.

Preliminary Round Schedule:

Mora, who had a strong bounce back season last year, hitting .285 with 23 homers and 104 RBIs, was scheduled to play in the inaugural 2006 event, but he pulled out before the tournament started because of concerns about his role. Mora was miffed that Venezuelan team officials planned on using him in the outfield, which he hadn’t played in several seasons, with Miguel Cabrera getting the starts at third base.

Excluded was pitcher Baek Cha-seung of the San Diego Padres, who has become a naturalized American citizen.

The Korea Baseball Organization held a technical committee meeting in Seoul Friday attended by national team coach Kim In-shik (Hanwha Eagles) and six assistant coaches. They finalized the list of 32 candidate players, including five playing abroad.

The 15 pitchers on the list included Kim Kwang-hyun and Chung Dae-hyun of the SK Wyverns of Korea, who led Team Korea to the Olympic title in Beijing; Ryu Hyun-jin (Hanwha); Yoon Seok-min (Kia Tigers); and Bong Joong-keun (LG Twins), as well as Hwang Doo-sung (Woori Heroes), who was not in the initial list of 45 candidates.

Lee Hye-chun (Japan’s Yakult Swallows), Song Seung-joon (Lotte Giants), Ma Il-young (Woori) and Seo Jae-weong (KIA) made the initial list but did not make the cut this time.

The catchers are Park Kyung-wan (SK), Kang Min-ho (Lotte), and the nine infielders include Kim Dong-ju (Doosan Bears), Lee Dae-ho (Lotte), and Park Jin-man (Samsung Lions).

Among the six outfielders were Kim Hyun-soo (Doosan), Lee Taek-keun (Woori) and Lee Jin-young (LG). Five of the eight players active overseas made the roster, including Choo Shin-soo (Cleveland Indians), and Lim Chang-yong (Yakult).

The technical committee, which originally planned to finalize a list of 28 players, announced 32 because it said it wanted to wait and see in the hopes that Lee and Park will join the team.
