Japan and Chinese Taipei in Championship at World Port

Japan Chinese Taipei Championship World PortJapan and Chinese Taipei face off in the championship of the World Port Tournament today. Japan is looking for its first gold medal in the event having only made the championship once before in 1985. Chinese Taipei is looking for its 2nd gold after winning in 2011.

Japan had to get here through Curacao, and they did so in grand fashion winning 15-0. Japan scored early and often en route to the win. They pounded out 15 hits while limiting Curacao to just 6.

Japan and Chinese Taipei split their two matches so far. Japan won the first match 2-1 on Tuesday. Chinese Taipei go their payback on Friday downing Japan 4-2 to earn its way into the championship game. And now they are here for a winner-take-all championship.

Netherlands Take 4th Place

In the 4th/5th place game, the host Dutch took down Cuba 3-1. The Netherlands pounded out 10 hits to pick up the victory behind 4 solid outings from the pitching staff. Diego Markwell started and went 3.1 scoreless innings. Jim Ploeger picked up the win in relief going 2.2 innings allowing just 1 run. The game was finished off by Kevin Kelly and Mike Bolsenbroek who picked up the save.

Through a weird way the tournament was set up Curacao, who finished 1-5, will gain 3rd place. More on this later in anther post.

2017 World Port Tournament Schedule for the Weekend:

Thursday July 6
Game A: Chinese Taipei 4, Netherlands 3
Game B: Cuba 2,  Japan 5

Friday July 7
Game C: Cuba 3, Curacao 5
Game D: Japan 2, Chinese Taipei 4 (Chinese Taipei to championship)

Saturday July 8
Game E: Cuba 1, Netherlands 3 (4th & 5th place)
Game F: Japan 15, Curacao 0 (Japan to championship)

Sunday July 9
Championship Japan vs  Chinese Taipei
