Chinese Taipei wins 2017 World Port Tournament

Chinese Taipei wins 2017 World Port Tournament with a 3-2 extra inning win over Japan. It is Chinese Taipei’s 2nd title in Rotterdam after winning in 2011 over Cuba. That is the 7th medal for Chinese Taipei. Japan won its 2nd medal and 2nd silver.

The game got exciting in the top of the 9th when Japan tied it at 2 to force extra innings. Ryoto Maeda came through in the 9th with an RBI single for Japan just after a catcher’s interference call put runners on the corners. Japan had a chance to take the lead but Togo Tada grounded out ending the inning.

It remained tied until the bottom of the 10th inning when Chinese Taipei put runners at 1st and 2nd. Then perhaps the biggest play of the game happened. Chia Yu Lin hit a fly ball to left field which would have been the 2nd out of the inning, but leftfielder Yudai Nakanishi dropped the ball which loaded the bases. The next batter Hsin Chuan Wang singled up the middle to bring home the winning run.

Chinese Taipei used five pitchers. Cheng Ho Wang picked up the win pitching 3.1 innings of relief. Takahiro Yamamoto took the loss for Japan tossing 1.1 innings of relief giving up the winning run.
