World Port Tournament Opens with Cuba Win

The 2017 World Port Tournament opened with a Cuba win on Saturday afternoon in Rotterdam defeating Curacao 3-2.

Curacao pounded out 11 hits in the game, but they could only scratch out 2 runs against the Cuba staff. But it was the defense that was the downfall. Curacao allowed only 1 earned run committing 3 errors in the game.

Cuba got on the board in the first. Curacao starter Marverich Lourens lasted just 1.1 innings. While he did not give up a hit, and only 1 earned run, he walked 5, threw a crucial wild pitch, and hit a batter. After getting an out, Lourens walked the next two hitters. He then uncorked a wild pitch that allowed the runners to move up a base. Cuba clean up hitter Osvaldo Vazquez drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly. Lourens would get out of the inning despite walking another and hitting a batter.

Curacao would tie it up in the 3rd inning scoring an unearned run of its own. But the string of unearned runs would continue in the bottom of the 3rd as Cuba would regain the lead scoring its second run of the game. After Vazquez walked, he moved to third on an error by Curacao second baseman and would wind up scoring on a ground out to third. Cuba would add another unearned run in the bottom of the 5th making it 3-1, but Curacao wasn’t done.

In the top of the 9th, Curacao strung together 3 singles to score a run cutting the lead to one. But with runners at first and second, Ardley Jansen, who went 3-for-5 in the game, flew out to end the threat and the game.
