Can the Bonn Capitals win a Baseball Bundesliga title?

Are the Bonn Capitals finally ready to take home the championship in the Bundesliga? The past two seasons the Capitals have won the North Division, yet neither time were they able to secure that ever allusive championship. Currently they sit once again atop the North Division and hold the best record in the league at 17-3.

After this last weekends action the Capitals hold a four game lead over second place Solingen Alligators (14-8). Over in the South Division Heidenheim holds onto the top spot with a 19-5 mark. The Capitals still have a two game set with Solingen here in a couple of weeks, but the only thing that stands between them and their first title is the playoffs. So before they start, let’s take a look at how the team has done statistically and how they stack up against the rest of the league.

Capitals Offense

The Capitals currently lead the North Division in almost every offensive category there is with some of them being huge advantages. The capitals lead the division in hits (186), doubles (33), triples (tied with 4), home runs (tied with 12), RBI (130), walks (106), hit-by-pitch (22), average (.316), slugging (.447), on base percentage (.434), and OPS (.881). Not to mention they have struck out less than any other team (99), and many of these numbers tower over the competition.

Along with this domination offensively comes some strong individual stats, and Bonn has many league leaders.

Christopher Goebel – He is 2nd in the division in hitting at .433 and leads the league in hits at 29. He is tied for 6th in the division with 4 doubles and 2nd in the league with 2 triples.

Wilson Norman Lee – He is not far behind Goebel in the batting title race at .359 ranking 5th in the division. He is tied for 6th with a pair of home runs and 4th in the division with 14 walks.

Daniel Lamb-Hunt – He ranks 6th in the batting race at .354. He is also 2nd in the division in RBI at 22, and is tied with Lee at 6th with a pair of home runs. He is also the division leader in doubles with 8.

Maurice Jose Wilhelm – He is the division leader in RBI at 23 and ranks 4th in home runs with 3.

There are 7 Bonn hitters in the top 15 in the division batting race, and we could go on and on with more rankings.

Capitals Pitching

Wilhelm also leads the division in ERA at just 0.34 over 26.2 innings pitched. He has given up just 1 earned run.

Sascha Koch is putting up numbers matching Wilhelm. Over 43.1 innings pitched Koch has give up just 7 earned runs for an ERA of just 1.45. He has also struck out 66 batters this year.

The Capitals have 4 games left in their schedule. They will face off with the Solingen Alligators on July 9th and then take on the Hamburg Stealers in a pair of games over July 15-16. Then the Capitals will face off with their greatest challenge, taking home their first championship trophy. They have definitely set themselves up for possibly a historic run in Bonn, but only time will tell.

What do you think? Will Bonn continue to dominate and take home a title? Will Mainz repeat? Will Mannheim return to their early glory days and win their 11th title and first since 1997? Or will recent champions like Solingen (2014) or Heidenheim (2015) return to the top of the hill?
