In a match up full of MLB All-Stars using a 3-run 8th inning to mount a comeback in yet one more exciting game during the 2017 World Baseball Classic, Team USA defeats Venezuela
Felix Hernandez did just what everyone thought he would do. He shut down the USA bats for 5.0 innings of shutout ball. He gave up just 3 hits while striking out 3. In the bottom of the 3rd, the USA loaded the bases with just 1 out. Up to bat was Adam Jones (the new Captain America?). Hernandez fooled Jones on a 2-2 count getting him to reach for a pitch and ground weakly to second baseman Jose Altuve who was quick to turn the double play ending the inning. The other four innings pitched by Hernandez went 1-2-3.
A half inning earlier Odor gave Venezuela a 2-0 lead on a solo home run to right.
But the USA took over in the bottom of the 8th inning. Leading off the inning for Team USA was once again Adam Jones. This time he wasn’t fooled by a pitch and on a 2-2 pitch he tied the game up with a home run to left center. But they weren’t done.
Getting his first WBC start, Alex Bregman picked up a pair of hits and a walk in 4 plate appearances.
Ian Kinsler went 2-for-5 in the lead off spot for Team USA.
Drew Smyly pitched 4.2 innings getting the start for Team USA. He gave up 1 unearned run on 3 hits while striking out 8.
