William DeWitt purchases the Reds for $4.625 million. DeWitt made a trade immortalized in the 1988 movie Bull Durham when Susan Sarandon’s character says, “Bad trades are a part of baseball; I mean who can forget Frank Robinson for Milt Pappas, for God’s sake?” DeWitt traded Robinson to the Orioles claiming he was old at age 30. In his first year Robinson would win the Triple Crown and be named AL MVP.
