Germany: Regensburg Sweeps Mainz to Tie for Division Lead

In a weekend consisting mainly of split series by top teams, Regensburg Buchbinder Legionare swept Mainz Athletics to tie for first place in the Bundesliga South division at a record of 17-5.

Regensburg was able to jump to an early lead in the second as they pounded four runs over the home team Mainz. The Legionaere were led by Richard Klijn who went 2-for-3 and collected four RBI on a home run and a double. Matthew Vance also came in offensive support going 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Christian Decher suffered his third loss of the season to Regensburg, giving up eight hits over eight innings of work and allowing four earned runs. Mike Bolsenbroek, on the other hand, was lights out for Regensburg as he also went eight innings and gave up one earned run over four hits while striking out nine. Bolsenbroek improved to 6-1 on the season, proving to be an ace for Regensburg.

Pitching once again was key for Regensburg as they took the final game of the weekend series 7-0, led by a combined shutout by starter Boris Bokai who notched the win in five innings and reliever Justin Kuehn. Kuehn earned his second save of the season throwing four innings.

Despite the strong performance, the game remained scoreless until the fifth inning, when Regensburg put up 3 unanswered runs in the top of the inning. Vance was strong again for the visitors as he knocked in two RBI going 2-for-3 with a double. Also with two RBI was Philipp Howard whose two hits were a homerun and double. With a game-high 3 RBI was Evan John LeBlanc who also had a home run and double.

The two teams will sit atop the south division for the week with Heidenheim behind just one game. Heidenheim had a buy this past weekend.

Third place Paderborn split their weekend series with first place Solingen, holding the north division leaders to a combined four runs.

In game one, six players had multi hit games for Paderhorn as they exploded for 11 runs on 16 hits. Marcel Schulz led with a game-high three RBI as he went 3-for-5 and Daniel Hinz finished 2-for-5 with two doubles, an RBI, and a game-high four runs scored. Harry Flynne threw a complete game for Paderborn, striking out 11 and did not allow Solingen to capitalize on 10 hits.

A complete game performance by both Solingen’s Nick Renault and Paderborn’s Eugene Heilmann made for a pitchers duel to decide the second game. Heilman suffered the loss giving up a walk-off RBI to Dominik Wulf in the bottom of the ninth. Renult dominated over his nine inning performance, striking out 13 and allowing just five hits.
