Spain: Tenerife Marlins Clinch Regular Season Title

The Tenerife Marlins continued to hold onto first place in the Spanish Division de Honor with a weekend sweep over San Inazio Bilbao. In other action, CB Barcelona took over second place by itself with a sweep of Baseball Navarra, while CBS Sant Boi split a weekend series with the Valencia Astros.

Barcelona has played two games less than Sant Boi and will finish up the season with a two game set with CD Pamplona to make up a previous series from mid-June.

Heading into the final weekend, the Marlins have already clinched the regular season title, but the rest of the standings could change. If Barcelona can win out, they will face the Marlins in the best-of-five championship series. Barcelona will face the two teams at the bottom of the standings in its next two series.

Game 1 saw an offensive barrage from the Marlins as they scored ten runs in the first two innings to dominate the game.

Leslie Nacar (W, 9-4) picked up the win tossing seven innings allowing just one run on three hits. He walked one and struck out six in the shortened game due to the run-rule.

Jose Romero (L, 7-6) took the loss giving up ten runs in just two innings of work. He gave up eleven hits.

Edwin Encarnacion had a nice day at the plate for the Marlins. He went 2-for-4 with three RBI including one on a solo home run in the seventh inning which ended the game giving the Marlins a 10-run lead.Victor Valazquez drove in three runs as well going 2-for-3. He also stole a base in the game. Lesther Galvan picked up a couple of hits himself going 2-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBI, and a double.

The lone run for San Inazio Bilbao came on a solo home run from Kelvin Feliz (1-for-3).

Game 2 was a much better game. The Marlins needed two runs in the eighth and one in the ninth to send the game into extra innings coming back from a 5-2 deficit to pull out the win.

Juan Lopez pitched well for San Inazio Bilbao but didn’t factor into the decision. He went 6.2 innings giving up just two runs. He gave up ten hits but struck out nine. Remigio Leal (L, 1-3) took the loss in relief.

Danny Morales (W, 1-0) pitched three innings of scoreless relief picking up the win for the Marlins. He gave up just one hit and struck out four.

Jose Morban (1-for-3) drove in a pair of runs for San Inazio when he hit a two-run home run in the second inning. Jose Romero (2-for-4), Kelvin Feliz (2-for-5), and Tomas Alvarez (2-for-3) all picked up two hits in the loss.

Yancarlo Franco had a huge game for the Marlins going 4-for-5 with a double and two stolen bases. Deion Galvan also had a nice day at the plate. He went 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI and two doubles. He would double in the winning run in the tenth inning.

In other league action:

Riccardo Hernandez won his tenth game of the year for Barcelona which ties him for the league lead. He tossed seven shutout innings giving up just three hits while striking out eight. He improve his ERA to 1.18 which ranks him second.

Jose Riera had a nice weekend. He went a combined 5-for-9 in the two games. He drove in two runs and scored two more for Barcelona.

Also for Barcelona, Pau Sancho went 6-for-9 over the weekend with a couple of doubles. While Oscar Anguelo went a combined 6-for-10 scoring five runs and driving in three more.

In Game 1 between Pamplona and Vilamoura, Elys Montano pitched a complete game shutout win. He gave up four hits and struck out eleven for Vilamoura. Alexis Fumero pitched well for Pamplona going eight innings allowing just one run on four hits while striking out eleven but took the loss.

Zael Honora picked up his tenth win for Sant Boi pitching a complete game in the first game of the weekend.

Rafael Rivas drove in three runs in the win for Sant Boi in Game 1 of the weekend. He went 2-for-5 with a double.
