WPT: Curacao and Netherlands Play Ten Inning Thriller

On Tuesday at the 2013 World Port Tournament there was only one game on the schedule. The host Netherlands played against the win-less Curacao team.

Both teams got great pitching performances from their starters. David Bergman went six innings allowing just one run on six hits for the Dutch. He struck out six Curacao batters but didn’t come away with the win.

Curacao starter Nick Veltkamp tossed six innings as well. He gave up two unearned runs on five hits while striking out five. But he too didn’t come away with the win. That’s because the bullpens would decide the outcome in extra innings.

Down 2-1 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Edinho Meyer came on as a pinch-hitter and he came up big. With two outs and runners at first and second, Meyer came up with a single to drive in the tying run. After neither team scored in the ninth, the game went to the tenth inning. And Meyer came up again.

Again with runners at first and second, Meyer once again came through. This time he came up with a walk off single to center field to end the game and put Curacao in the win column with a 3-2 win.

Kevin Kelly picked up the win tossing four innings of scoreless relief. He struck out six and allowed only three hits.

Johannes Gregorius had a big day at the plate for Curacao going 4-for-5 and stealing a base.
