Schedule Released for II IBAF 12U Baseball World Cup

The IBAF released the schedule for the 2013 12U Baseball World Cup to be held in Taipei City this July.

This is the second edition of the tournament with 16 teams competing this time around. The inaugural tournament was played in 2011 and won by Chinese Taipei who downed Cuba in the championship game.

The 16 teams will compete starting July 18th in a round robin lasting until the 25th. The quarterfinals will be held on July 26, semifinals on July 27, and the medal games held on July 28.

The 16 teams were put into two pools:

  • Group A: Colombia, Czech Republic, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Philippines, Chinese Taipei
  • Group B: Brazil, Korea, Hong Kong, Pakistan, Panama, Russia, USA, Venezuela

This is the first time the USA, Czech Republic, Pakistan, Russia, Colombia, Panama, and India have sent teams to the tournament.

The Executive Board decided earlier this year that curve balls will be allowed. However, there will be other restrictions such as pitch counts to try and protect the young athletes.

Highlights of the Day 1 action begins with Brazil taking on South Korea in the opening game. The USA will play its first game as the home team facing off with Panama. Returning champ Chinese Taipei will start their title defense with a game against Colombia.
