Germany: Mainz Athletics Lead South Division

In the South Division of the German Bundesliga, the Buchbinder Legionaere finally gave the division leading Mainz Athletics a loss. The Legionaere shutout the Athletics in Game 1 of the two game set, but the Athletics came back strong in Game 2 to earn the split and hold tight to the division lead.

Game 1 saw Mike Bolsenbroek toss a complete game shutout. He gave up just three hits and struck out 12 en route to the win for the Legionaere.

Bolsenbroek was aided offensively by Matt Vance who hit his first home run of the  year. Vance walked three times, scored twice, and drove in a pair of runs. He also stole his fourth base of the year.

Christian Decher pitched well for Mainz but took the loss going seven innings allowing just two runs (one earned) on two hits. He did walk six and hit two batters.

The Athletics got back on track in Game 2 with a 6-1 win. The game was shortened by rain as Pat Haugen picked up the win for Mainz tossing 5.2 innings allowing just one run on seven hits. Justin Kuehn took the loss for Buchbinder.

Keven Kotowski set the table for Mainz in the lead off spot going 2-for-3 with a double and a walk. He scored a pair of runs and drove in another.

In other South Division action:

Spenser Payne had a huge day for the Bad Homburg Hornets. He hit a pair of home runs in Game 1 of the double header going 2-for-5. He then hit another, his fourth of the year in Game 2.

Kyel Waddell hit his second home run for Bad Homburg in Game 2 of the double header.

Elliot Glynn pitched a complete game shutout for Bad Homburg in Game 2 giving up just four hits.

Game 1 for Heidenheim saw a pair of players with good games. Simon Guhring homered, his 5th of the year, going 2-for-3 with three RBI. While Jay Peci tripled going 3-for-5.

Michael Stephan homered going 3-for-5 for the Haar Disciples in Game 1 of the weekend. He would add a double in Game 2.

The Haar Disciples Joshua Petersen doubled, tripled, and drove in four runs in Game 1 of the double header.
