Austria: Vienna Wanderers Kick Off Season with a Pair of Wins

The Austrian Baseball League kicked off this past weekend with a two-game series between the Vienna Wanderers and the Vienna Neustadt Diving Ducks.

Game 1 saw a complete game from Wanderers starter Feliz Zimmerle as he led them to a 6-4 win. Zimmerle held off a 9th inning comeback attempt by the Ducks to hold on for the win as the defending champions started the season off on the right foot.

Game 2 was a little more interesting. The Ducks won on the field 5-1, but would wind up losing the game officially 9-0.

The reigning MVP Ryan Kroko helped lead the Ducks to the win along with Wayne Ough. Kroko went seven innings allowing just two runs (one earned) while striking out five. Ough pitched the final two innings to earn the save.

Joseph Wilson took the loss tossing six innings.

However, the Ducks used three foreign players to which the Wanderers filed a protest. A day later, the league awarded the Wanderers the win after upholding their protest.

So, instead of splitting the series like they did on the field, the Wanderers start the season 2-0 while the Diving Ducks start 0-2.
