January 30, 1948

General manager of the Philadelphia Phillies and former pitcher Herb Pennock collapses in a New York hotel and dies later at the hospital. Shortly after his death, he is elected to the Hall of Fame.

Pennock won 240 games for 3 different teams between 1912 and 1934. He won 4 World Series titles with the New York Yankees.
