IBAF 18U WBC: Korea Shuts Out Japan to Take 5th Place

SEOUL, South Korea – The 5th place game in the 2012 IBAF 18U Baseball World Championships concluded this morning as the host South Korea squad picked up the win over Japan 3-0.

Japan had beaten Korea just two days prior knocking Korea out of the gold medal match. This time Korea would get its revenge and finish ahead of Japan in the final standings.

The weather was overcast and the crowd was sparse at 10am, but those who were here rooted on their team furiously.

Lee Geon Wook baffled the Japanese hitters for 8 innings allowing only 3 hits while striking out 7. He was going toe to toe with Japanese sensation Shohei Otani, who was clocked at 99mph (160kmh)earlier this year. Otani pitched well battling some control problems topping out at 96mph (155kmh).

Despite taking the loss, Otani had a good game. He struck out 12 batters in 7 innings of work allowing only 2 runs on 2 hits. At the plate he was 1-for-3 and made a nice running catch in left field in the 9th inning to save a sure double.

Both starting pitchers pitched well keeping the hits to a minimum. Both teams combined for only 7 hits in the game. Jun Suk Song doubled and drove in a run for Korea, but the big hit came from Dae Young Yoon who homered down the left field line in the 9th inning for Korea to stretch the lead to 3.
