HAARLEM, Netherlands – The seeds for the final four teams to advance to the medal round are set after the games were finished on Friday. The four teams were set before the games started, but the seeds were still up in the air with Cuba and the Netherlands squaring off and the winner taking the #3 seed.
Puerto Rico 6, Chinese Taipei 5
Puerto Rico finished off the round robin play with a perfect 5-0 record taking down Chinese Taipei, who finished a disappointing 0-5. Puerto Rico jumped out to a 4-0 lead after a half an inning of play as Chinese Taipei starter Kuan Ju Chen couldn’t get out of the first inning only going a third of an inning. Puerto Rico pounded out 5 hits in the top of the first with the big blow coming on an Antonio Candelaria (2-for-5) 3-run home run.
Nelson Feliu and Gabriel Robles both had 2 hits and a RBI. Ramesis Rosas didn’t pitch bad but didn’t get much help from his defense allowing 3 unearned runs on 3 hits in 4.2 innings. Rawell Rivera picked up the win finishing the game allowing 2 runs in 4.1 innings.
Cuba 4, Netherlands 0
Cuba shut out the hometown Dutch team to take the #3 seed leaving the Dutch to face Puerto Rico as the #4 seed.
Vladimir Garcia pitched great going 8 shutout innings allowing only 4 hits to pick up the win. Kevin Heijstek took the loss giving up 4 runs (3 ER) in 5.2 innings on 9 hits and 3 walks.
had a big day at the plate for Cuba going 2-for-2 with 2 RBI and 3 walks. Barbaro Arruebarruena was also hot at the plate going 3-for-4 scoring 2 runs and knocking in another.
