Haarlem Baseball Week: Puerto Rico Defeats USA to stay Unbeaten

HAARLEM, Netherlands – After a little bit of rain that postponed a few games, the tournament is back on. Tuesday three games were played making up one of the rained out games.

Chinese Taipei 1, Cuba 2

Cuba finally got in the win column in a match of the two remaining winless teams. A pitcher’s duel ended with a 2-1 Cuba win when  Frederich Cepeda hit a 2-run home run in the bottom of the 8th inning. Ismel Jimenez picked up the win in relief tossing a scoreless inning. Pablo Fernandez got the save  getting the last two outs in the 9th.

Chen Meng Fan pitched well for Chinese Taipei tossing 8 innings allowing only 2 runs on 6 hits but took the loss. Po Ting Hsiao went 2-for-4 with a double.

USA 2, Puerto Rico 3

Puerto Rico continued its strong run through the field with its 4th straight win. This time they beat the formerly unbeaten USA.

Juan Padilla pitched well earning the win going 6.1 innings allowing only 2 runs (1 ER) on 6 hits. Jorge Jimenez had a big day at the plate going 1-for-2 with 2 walks and a 2-run home run.

Ryne Stanek took the loss for the USA going 5 innings allowing 3 runs on 3 hits. Jose Trevino, a freshman from Oral Roberts, led the way for the Americans offensively going 3-for-4 with a RBI.

Netherlands 18, Japan 3 (7)

The game was close with The Netherlands winning 3-2 heading into the top of the 4th inning. Then the flood gates opened and the Dutch scored 9 runs in the 4th to take a huge lead.

Diegomar Markwell picked up the win for the Dutch pitching 6 innings allowing only 3 runs on 9 hits. Rudy van Heydoorn had a big day at the plate going 3-for-4 with 5 RBI. Heydoorn hit a 3-run home run and a double. Bas de Jong went 3-for-5 driving in 4 runs and scoring 3 times. Dwayne Kemp had 3 hits and Wesley Conner picked up 2.

Ginji Miyoshi went 2-for-4 for Japan scoring a run and driving in another. Kazuto Wakizono pitched in with 2 hits of his own. Tomu Inoue started and took the loss going only an inning giving up 3 runs. Ryoma Yamashiro took the brunt of the Dutch attack pitching only .2 innings giving up 7 runs on 7 hits.
