Haarlem Baseball Week: USA and The Netherlands Pick up Wins on Day 3

HAARLEM, The Netherlands – Day 3 of the 2012 Haarlem Baseball Week continued with a pair of close games as the USA stayed unbeaten and the host Dutch team put a notch in the win column.

Netherlands 3, Chinese Taipei 0

Chinese Taipei committed three errors and the Dutch team took advantage scoring three unearned runs to pick up the win.

David Bergman pitched well for The Netherlands going 7 scoreless innings allowing only 6 hits to pick up the win. Berry van Driel finished the game to pick up the save. Jung Hao Hsieh took the loss lasting 5.1 giving up 3 unearned runs.

Rudy van Heydoorn had a big day at the plate going 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a RBI. Stijn van der Meer added a couple hits of his own and a RBI. Po Ting Hsiao led the Chinese Taipei team at the plate going 2-for-4 with a double.

Cuba 2, USA 5

With the score tied at 2, the USA picked up 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th to pick up the win against Cuba.

Jonathon Crawford, a sophomore from Florida, pitched well going 5.1 innings and allowing only 2 runs (1 ER) but didn’t factor into the decision. Carlos Rodon, a freshman from North Carolina St., picked up the win in relief pitching 2 scoreless innings. Michael Lorenzen, sophomore from Cal State Fullerton, picked up the save coming in in the 9th to pitch out of a bases loaded jam.

Freddy Alvarez took the loss lasting 6 innings allowing 3 runs (2 ER) on 5 hits.

Trea Turner, freshman from North Carolina St., had a big day at the plate again. Turner went 3-for-4 with 2 doubles, 2 runs scored, a RBI, and a stolen base. D.J. Peterson, sophomore from New Mexico, picked up a pair of hits as well driving in a run with a solo home run in the first inning.

Alfredo Despaigne hit a solo home run for Cuba leading off the top of the 6th inning.
