Haarlem Baseball Week: Puerto Rico and USA Win on Day Two

HAARLEM, The Netherlands – The 2012 Haarlem Baseball Week continued on Saturday with a pair of good games including the host country squaring off with a surprising Puerto Rican club.

Japan 1, USA 4

Marco Gonzales, a sophomore this past season at Gonzaga, pitched 7 solid innings for Team USA. Gonzales gave up only 1 run on 3 hits while striking out 10 to pick up the win. David Berg, a freshman from UCLA, picked up the save with 2 innings of hitless relief.

Michael Conforto, a freshman from Oregon State, led the offense with a pair of hits driving in a run. Second baseman Trea Turner was the catalyst at the top of the order going 0-for-1 but walked 3 times, stole 2 bases, and scored twice.

Tomu Inoue took the loss starting and only going 2 innings allowing 2 runs. Second baseman Yoshiki Eto hit a solo home run for the only Japanese run.

Puerto Rico 4, The Netherlands 2

Puerto Rico continued its winning ways taking down the host Netherlands for its second win in a row. Both teams jumped out for 2 runs in the first inning, but the Puerto Rican pitching staff shut down the Dutch the rest of the way.

Milton Velazques picked up the win going 6.1 innings allowing 2 runs on 4 hits, 2 walks, and striking out 6. Rabell Rivera picked up his second save in as many games. Rob Crordemans took the loss tossing 6 innings allowing only 3 runs (2 ER).

Bryan Engelhardt led the Dutch offense going 2-for-4 and driving in 2 runs. Jimenez, Ortiz, and Nazario all pitched in with 2 hits for Puerto Rico in the win.
