2011 World Port Tournament – Taiwan Wins Title

THE NETHERLANDS – Taiwan and Cuba needed extra innings to declare a winner on Sunday in the 2011 World Port Tournament at Family Stadium in Rotterdam. An 11th inning RBI single by Huang Chih-pei game Taiwan the title. Taiwan finished the tournament with an impressive 8-1 mark, including 3 wins over Cuba.

The game went back and forth with Cuba taking a 2-0 lead after 3 and a half innings. Taiwan got a run back in the 4th and then jumped out to a 4-3 lead with a 3 run 5th inning. Wei Thing Lin drove in 3 runs with a double for Taiwan in the 5th, but Cuba quickly tied it up in the top of the 7th.

Yassel Puig (3-for6) was a home run shy of the cycle for Taiwan. Lin Chen-hua picked up the win in relief.

Yadier Pedroso picked up the loss going 6 innings in relief on just 1 day’s rest.

This was the first title for Taiwan after having finished 2nd twice and 3rd 3 times.
