SOUTH KOREA – Every other Friday I hope to take a look at how the foreign players in the KBO are doing. So today we will start with the league leading SK Wyverns.
SK Wyverns
Both Gary Glover and Jim Magrane have pitched in 5 games, and each have an identical 1-0 record. That is where the similarities end. Glover has posted a solid 3.29 ERA over 27.1 innings striking out 27 along the way to lead the league. Magrane has struggled just a bit more posting a 4.42 ERA in only 18.1 innings and has allowed more than 1 hit an inning (23). SK continues to roll through the KBO however.
Doosan Bears
The Bears just inked a new foreign player in pitcher Fernando Nieve to join their ace Dustin Nippert. Nippert has pitched great so far this season. In 4 games, he is 3-0 (1st in wins) with a 1.23 ERA (1st in league). He has struck out 22 in his 22 innings but has walked 9 batters. Nippert goes again today against the SK Wyverns.
Samsung Lions
The Lions are struggling to stay above .500 but their imported pitcher is starting to show some life. Ken Kadokura is 1-2 but has lowered his ERA to 3.60 for the season. Kadokura has given up 4 home runs and 10 walks in 20 innings, but has also been plagued with 8 unearned runs. Designated-hitter Ryan Garko has slumped of late. His average has dropped nearly 40 points over the last week down to .236. While he has driven in 13 runs, he has only 17 hits through 21 games.
LG Twins
Radhames Liz has dropped another game falling to 1-3 on the year through 5 starts. His ERA sits at 4.65. Through 31 innings he has given up 29 hits, 14 walks, and 4 home runs. Teammate Ben Jukich has a better record at 3-1 but hasn’t pitched much better. Through 24.2 innings, Jukich has an ERA of 4.38 giving up 22 hits, 10 walks, and 4 home runs.
KIA Tigers
KIA has two of the best pitchers in the league right now in Travis Blackley and Aquilino Lopez. Blackley leads the way with a 1.73 ERA and a 1-1 record. Through 26 innings he has given up only 18 hits, struck out 24, but has walked 12. Lopez is pitching great too. With an ERA of only 1.80, Lopez has posted a 3-1 record. Blackley will go again today against the Lotte Giants.
NEXEN Heroes
NEXEN starter Brandon Knight has pitched well even though his record doesn’t show it. With an ERA of 2.27, Knight has posted a 1-3 record. Through 31.2 innings, Knight has allowed 27 hits, 12 walks, and 16 strikeouts. Teammate Corey Aldridge has struggled to find his footing at the plate. Aldridge is hitting at a clip of .229 through 22 games. He has driven in 13 and hit 3 home runs.
Lotte Giants
Bryan Corey has had 1 lousy outing, but the Giants are simply struggling as a team. Corey has posted a 4.15 ERA giving up 14 earned runs in 30.1 innings. Four of those runs came in his last outing on the 24th. Corey goes again today against fellow foreigner Travis Blackley and the KIA Tigers. The Giants other foreign import is still on the DL. Ryan Sadowski pulled an oblique muscle and it seems like his return can’t come soon enough as the Giants struggle with staying out of the cellar.
Hanwha Eagles
Hanahwa has two prospects for the next release in the KBO. Oneli Perez has posted a 6.30 ERA in 8 games out of the bullpen. With a 1-1 record and 3 saves, Perez has not pitched well. Teammate Julio DePaula has pitched even worse. Through 4 starts he has a 7.48 ERA and is 0-3 on the season. Through 21.2 innings DePaula has given up 29 hits, 14 walks, and 3 home runs.
