Italy: Signings From Around the League

ITALY – T&A San Marino has signed former Seattle Mariners pitching prospect Renee Cortez for the upcoming 2011 season. The Italian Baseball League (IBL) club finished in second-place during the regular season last year with a 28-14 record.

The Venezuelan right-hander went 26-27 with a 3.89 ERA in 200 appearances over seven seasons. The 28-year-old reached as high as Triple-A and racked up 410 strikeouts and 155 walks in 446-plus innings.

Cortez, who is also a member of the Venezuelan National Team, is currently pitching for the Margarita Bravos in the Venezuelan Winter League.

Montepaschi Grosseto has signed former Danesi Nettuno outfielder Luis Perez. The 27-year-old Venezuelan, who has also suited up for the Spanish League club Tenerife Marlins, batted .329 with six extra-base hits and 14 RBIs in 23 games last year.

Danesi Nettuno continued its busy offseason with the signing of Dominican infielder Olmo Rosario. The 30-year-old, who batted .318 with 19 extra-base hits and 28 RBIs last year for the Catania Warriors, will join free agent signees Juan Camilo (Cariparma Parma) and Kelly Ramos (Montepaschi Grosseto) in a revamped offensive lineup.

Cariparma Parma has tabbed former Toronto Blue Jays minor leaguer Rodney Medina to replace Juan Camilo in the outfield. The 29-year-old hit .297 with 162 extra-base hits in 604 games.

The North East Knights have inked former Minnesota Twins prospect Rene Alexander Leveret. The 25-year-old first baseman batted .294 with 18 homers and 143 RBIs in 216 minor league games.
