PHILIPPINES – Jon Jon Robles punched out 10 batters and Niño Tator stroked three doubles to help the Manila Sharks edge the Cebu Dolphins, 2-1, Saturday at the Felino Marcelino Memorial Baseball Field in Taguig City to capture its first Dunkin’ Donuts Baseball Philippines crown.
Robles, who nearly led the Arrows Ostrava to the Czech League championship in 2009, limited Cebu to just a pair of hits to lead the three-time league bridesmaid to the historic win in the rubber match of the best-of-three title series.
Tator went 4-for-4 and delivered a go-ahead, two-base hit in the fifth off Cebu starter Edmer Del Socorro.
The Dolphins opened the scoring in the second to grab a 1-0 lead. Del Socorro tagged Robles with a double to center field, moved up one base on a sacrifice bunt, and sprinted home on a squeeze play by Ram Alipio.
The Sharks knotted the score the following inning when Christian Galedo crossed the plate on an error by Jonard Pareja. Galedo ignited the game-winning rally two frames later with a single, swiped second and raced home on Tator’s clutch two-bagger.
Del Socorro (0-1) was charged with the setback after giving up two runs on eight hits.
Robles (2-0) won his second game in the championship series and was named the league MVP. The 25-year-old left-hander, who pitched University of Santo Tomas to a pair of collegiate titles, earned his second Baseball Philippines title after helping the Makati Mariners win the inaugural crown in 2007.
