Cuba Wins Haarlem Baseball Week Finale

THE NETHERLANDS – Yunier Mendoza highlighted a five-run opening frame with a two-run double, and Angel Pena tossed five scoreless innings before running out of gas, as Cuba finished the Haarlem Baseball Week international tournament with a 12-5 victory Sunday against the Netherlands.

Cuba, which finished in second place with a 6-2 record, roughed up Dutch starter David Bergman for five runs and eight hits over four innings. However, Rene Cremer wrapped up a game-tying rally in the sixth with a two-run single to get the tournament host back into the game.

Former Cuban League Home Run champion Alexei Bell put the Big Red Machine back on top in the seventh with a solo shot, and skipper German Mesa’s squad rocked Dutch relievers Nick Veltkamp and Gregory Gustina for six runs the following frame to settle the outcome.

Mendoza drove in a trio of runs with two hits, while Bell went 3-for-4 with three RBIs for Cuba.

JAPAN 16, NJCAA ALL-STARS 6
Yukihiro Mushima knocked in four runs and Japan plated nine scores in the eighth to capture third place with a win over the American squad of junior college standouts. Yusuke Matsubayashi scattered five hits and two runs in six innings to earn the win. Jared Womack and Wade Hinkle both hit went deep for the NJCAA All Stars.
