TAIWAN – The La New Bears overcame a sluggish start to beat the Uni-President Lions 3-1 on a wet Sunday evening to finish off a three-game sweep against the reigning Tawain Series champion
at the Douliou County Baseball Stadium.
The Lions touched American left-hander Luis Villarreal with a run in the second to grab an early lead. However, the Bears starter answered back with four scoreless frames en route to his second win of the year.
The Bears pulled alongside the Lions in the fourth on Chang Ming-yen’s RBI groundout, and tasted the lead for the first time in the seventh on a run-scoring single by Shih Yen-wei. La New added an insurance run in the final frame to seal the win.
Reliever Hsu Yu-wei (0-3) was charged with the loss after giving up the go-ahead score in the seventh.
Uni-President first baseman Kao Guo-ching doubled in the second inning to become the fastest player in the history of the CPBL to tally 700 hits. Kao, who reached the mark in just 594 games, topped the previous record of 595 games set by former Brother Elephant star Chen Chih-yuan.
The lone remaining matchup between the Elephants and the Sinon Bulls in Tianmu was postponed due to wet weather.
