COLOMBIA – Venezuela erupted for six runs in the first inning and completed a perfect trek at the IX South American Games Saturday with a 10-8 win against Colombia to claim the gold medals.
Argentina surprised the Netherlands Antilles 8-6 to win the bronze medal game.
Venezuela finished the tournament unbeaten in five games and outscored their opponents by a margin of 53-22. Humberto Querales had three hits and Jonathan Sivira homored as the tournament favorites trounced Argentina 11-1 on Friday behind a strong outing by Oswaldo Perdomo to reach the championship game.
The host nation fought back from an early six-run hole and got back into the game in the sixth on a towering home run off the bat of Carlos Villalobos. The 34-year-old utility man recently signed with the North East Knights of the Italian Baseball League.
But manager Henry Campos’ squad regrouped to silence the bats of Colombia the rest of the game to clinch the tournament title.
