FIBS Website Debuts English Section

ITALY – The Italian Baseball and Softball Federation (FIBS) recently added a whole section in English to go along with a new website dedicated entirely to the Italian Baseball League (IBL), a professional circuit with eight teams that is governed by FIBS.

The IBL is one of the premier baseball leagues in Europe featuring an array of talented American and Latino players with minor league or major league experience. Fortitudo Bologna, led by sluggers Richard Austin and Eddy Garabito, defeated T&A San Marino in last year’s Italian Series.

Several players who were born in Italy have reached the Major Leagues. Marino Paul Pieretti (nicknamed Chick) pitched six seasons in the big leagues from 1945 to 1950. In the offseasons, Pieretti worked in a slaughterhouse and was known for killing cattle with a baseball bat.

Other Italian-born major leaguers included the following:

RHP Julio Bonetti
RHP Rinaldo Ardizoia
RHP Louis Americo Polli
INF Henry Arcado Biasatti
INF Reno Bertoia
