UNITED STATES – The Chicago Cubs have signed Cuban right-hander Juan Yasser Serrano to a $250,000 deal, according to the cable sports network ESPN. The deal, which is not expected to be finalized for several weeks due to paperwork, was not confirmed by the National League club.
Serrano is projected to begin his professional career in the U.S. with the Cubs high Single-A or Double-A affiliates.
The former Villa Clara pitcher, who defected last spring, posted a 14-16 career record with a 4.40 ERA in the Cuban League. He still must pass a physical examination before he can join the Cubs.
