IBL Club Hires American Skipper

ITALY – The North East Knights of the Italian Baseball League have hired American skipper Steve Weidner for the 2010 season. Weidner served as a player/coach for the second division club Arezzo last year.

The 35-year-old Weidner (pictured, middle) debuted in the IBL with Godo in 2001 before bouncing around with clubs in Imola and Novara. He arrived at Arezzo in 2006 and led the third division team to the 2008 Series B title and a promotion to the second division, Series A2.

The Scranton, Pennsylvania native, who will be assisted by assistant coaches Daniele Fuzzi and Omar Valdes, also has an Italian passport due to his mother’s European roots.
