CUBA – Elephant’s closer Yasiel Morales, perfect in two win opportunities, was named Player of the Week, presented by Víctor Rodríguez Díaz and the Cuban Baseball Federation Site for the period through Sunday.
Morales, struck out seven batters in 7 complete innings. He posted wins in two games, against Camagüey and Las Tunas, and helped the Elephants to stay in fourth place of the Western League.
He limited batters to an opponent batting average to .188 (6-32) while allowing one earned run during the week ending with a 1.29 ERA and five walks.
It is the first weekly honor for Morales.
Followed closely by: Wasp’s right-hander Félix Rivera went 2-0 during the week, victories against Matanzas and Industriales. Had ERA of 0.00 after 4 2/3 innings of work.
In a brilliant campaign, the Roosters’ infielder, Yulieski Gourriel, was named on Monday Player of the Week.
Gourriel homered six times during the period including a three home run game, against Camagüey on December 17. Also, the 24-year-old hit .611 (11-for-18) last week, and his six homers and 14 RBIs were the highest for any player in a week during the present tournament.
Yulieski had 10 runs scored; slugging of 1.667 and in addition his OPS% was 2.387. Thanks to this phenomenal week Gourriel is now batting .387 with 50 RBIs (leader) and 18 home runs (leader).
