Marlins Prospect Shot In Puerto Rico

PUERTO RICO – Florida Marlins minor league shortstop Osvaldo Martinez was wounded in a drive-by shooting Wednesday morning in his hometown of Carolina, Puerto Rico.

According to Puerto Rican police authorities, the 21-year-old middle infielder was shot several times while driving near his home. The former 11th-round pick was taken to a nearby hospital for surgery.

Martinez played for the Class A Jupiter Hammerheads of the Florida State League where he batted .254 with 54 runs scored, 45 RBIs and 16 steals in 130 games.

“The Florida Marlins are aware of a shooting incident involving Minor Leaguer Osvaldo Martinez in Puerto Rico this morning. At this time, we are trying to get more information. The entire organization’s thoughts and prayers are with Osvaldo and his family,” the Marlins expressed in a statement released Wednesday night.
