Top Dominican Prospect Charged With Murder

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC – San Francisco Giants prospect Angel Villalona has been charged with murdering a 25-year-old man at a La Romana bar this past weekend.

The talented first baseman played in 74 games with San Jose (Class A) this season. He was chosen by Baseball America as the Giants’ top prospect prior to the 2008 season, and was selected for the Futures Game during the All-Star festivities last year.

Just 19-years-old, Villalona turned himself in 12 hours after the fatal shooting and wore a bulletproof vest at his Monday court hearing. He tried to hide his face from photographers and refused to talk to reporters.

Villalona, who received a club-record US$2.1 million signing bonus in 2006, was ordered jailed for two months by Judge Aranibal Manzano Zapata while Dominican police prepare their case.

If found guilty, he could face up to 20 years in prison for the Saturday night shooting death of Mario Felix de Jesus Velete.
