THE NETHERLANDS – Rob Cordemans handcuffed Japan for seven dominant innings and the Dutch National Team rolled to an 8-0 win Monday at the World Port Tournament in Rotterdam.
The Sparta/Feyenoord right-hander held the Japanese hitless for 6 1/3 innings to help the Dutch snap a four-game losing skid at this year’s tourney. Cordemans, 34, walked one and struck out six while limiting Japan to a lone single in a more than impressive outing to earn the win.
The Dutch (1-4) raced to a quick 2-0 lead in the opening frame, and stretched the lead to 4-0 with a pair of runs in the fifth. American coach Rod Delmonico watched his team tally three more scores the following inning to deal Japan (2-3) their third loss in five games.
Corendon Kinheim slugger Bryan Engelhardt, who currently leads the Dutch Major League with six homers, went 4-for-4 with three RBIs to ignite the Orange and Black 16-hit attack. L&D Amsterdam outfielder Bas de Jong drove in a pair of runs with two doubles.
Unbeaten Cuba (4-0) will meet Taiwan (2-2) in the lone tournament matchup slated for Tuesday.
