SOUTH KOREA – The Kia Tigers used strong pitching and a potent offense to win both ends of a three-game set against the LG Twins last weekend to clinch the series win.
KIA pounded LG 14-0 on Friday behind a monster game by catcher Kim Sang-hoon, who cracked a pair of long balls and tallied six RBIs in the blowout victory. Rookie infielder Ahn Chi-hong and outfielder Na Ji-wan also belte homers for the Tigers.
Aquilino Lopez allowed five hits and walked two in seven shutout innings to pick up the easy win in a 101-pitch outing.
The Twins chased KIA ace Yoon Seok-min in the fifth en route to a 7-2 win on Saturday. Park Kyeong-su drove in two runs and Kwon Yeong-kwan homered to help LG even the series.
However, KIA coasted to a 9-2 victory in the series finale behind a four-hit performance by Choi Hee-seop, and a nice outing from Yang Hyeon-jeong.
Choi tallied six RBIs with a pair of homers and scored three runs to lead a Tigers’ offense that outscored the Twins 25-9 in the series.
Yang allowed two runs in a 90-pitch appearance over five innings to register the win.
SAMSUNG REBOUNDS TO WIN SERIES AGAINST DOOSAN
The Samsung Lions rebounded from a series opening 13-4 loss to the Doosan Bears Friday evening with back-to-back victories this past weekend to claim the three-game set, two games to one.
The Lions routed the Bears 12-3 on Saturday behind two home runs by first baseman Chae Tae-in, and Park Seok-min’s three extra-base hits. Chae drove in four runs while the Samsung third baseman delivered a homer and two doubles
Staff ace Yoon Seong-hwan tuned in another solid outing allowing three runs and seven hits in six workman-like innings.
Both teams scored all of their runs before the fifth inning as Samsung took the rubber match with a 5-4 triumph on Sunday.
Shin Myeong-cheol went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs, and Samsung closer Oh Seung-hwan worked a perfect ninth to record his third save of the season.
SK WYVERNS SWEEP HANHWA EAGLES
Song Eun-beom scattered one run over seven strong innings and Jeong Geun-woo collected four hits to help SK Wyverns beat the Hanhwa Eagles 8-2 Sunday to finish off a three-game sweep.
The two-time defending Korea Baseball Organization champion opened the series with 10-9 win Friday night, and plated five 10th-inning runs in Saturday’s 9-4 victory.
Song struck out eight while giving up a walk an three hits to secure the win in a 108-pitch outing.
Jeong, SK’s speedy leadoff man, reached base five times in a 4-for-4 effort that featured a pair of doubles and a stolen base. Park Jae-hong added a home run in the opening frame, and Victor Diaz went deep for the Eagles for the second consecutive game.
SEOUL HEROES DENIES LOTTE SERIES SWEEP
Lee Hyeon-seung tossed six effective innings and the Seoul Heroes captured a 6-2 win over the Lotte Giants in the series finale this past Sunday. The Giants picked up a pair of five-run victories (13-5, 5-0) in the first two encounters.
Seoul third baseman Hwang Jae-gyun connected for a crucial two-run double in the third to give the Heroes a 2-1 lead. Later in the same inning, Doug Clark delivered an RBI single to plate Hwang with what would prove to be the game-winning score.
Lee struck out four while giving up two runs and five hits to continue his early season success. Heroes’ closer Hwang Doo-seong earned his fourth save of the year by fanning three of the four batters he faced.
