TAIWAN – Ying-Feng Tsai threw six effective innings and the La New Bears beat the Brother Elephants 5-2 in front of 3,470 fans in Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) action this past Thursday.
The Bears scored twice in the second off Elephants’ starter Iyono Takateru for an early 2-0 advantage. But the lead was short-lived as the Elephants touched Tsai for a pair of runs in the fourth to tie the game at 2-all. However, the Bears tallied the go-ahead score in the sixth, and added an insurance run in both the eighth and ninth frames to register the victory.
Tsai (1-0) allowed two runs and six hits to pick up the win.
Second baseman Chih-Ping Lin and designated hitter Chin-Feng Chen each had two hits apiece for the Bears.
Takateru (0-1) suffered the setback after surrendering nine hits and three runs in seven innings.
BIG INNING LIFTS SINON BULLS OVER UNI-PRESIDENT LIONS
Shih-Yang Deng had two RBIs and the Sinon Bulls exploded for five seventh-inning runs to dispose of the Uni-President Lions 6-4 last Thursday in front of a smallish crowd of 1,880.
Deng’s two-run double highlighted the Bulls late charge that erased a 2-1 deficit. However, right-fielder Chia-Hsien Hsieh, who was 1-for-3, left the game in the eighth after getting hit by a pitch.
Uni-President was led by Chun-Yu Kuo who went 2-for-4 with a double, home run, and two RBIs.
Reliever Ming-Chin Tsai (1-0) came out of the bullpen to earn the win. Sinon starter Ying-Chieh Lin scattered a run and one hit over 5 2/3 innings with five strikeouts but got the no-decision.
Michael Callaway (0-1) was charged with the loss after giving up four runs – only two earned – and five hits in six innings.
