USA – The University of Michigan will retire former pitcher Jim Abbott’s baseball jersey on April 18 prior to a home game against the Michigan State Spartans , the university announced Wednesday.

Abbott ranks fourth in school history with 26 wins in a single season and wore No. 31 while pitching for the Wolverines from 1986 to 1988. The southpaw will become the fifth person in Michigan baseball history to have his jersey retired.

Other former players to have their uniforms retired includes Don Lund (1943-45), Moby Benedict (1954-56), Bill Freehan (1961) and long-time coach Ray Fisher (1921-58).

The retirement ceremony is scheduled to get underway 20 minutes before the Wolverines 1:05 p.m. against against their crosstown rivals.
