CANADA – What is it about baseball?
Hockey players leap at opportunities to wear a national-team jersey. Steve Nash gave months of his life to bolster Basketball Canada entries at international events. Even the once-entitled U.S. Dream Team got the NBA’s biggest stars, the Kobes, LeBrons and Kidds, buying in to a multi-year, team-first program in order to reclaim the Olympic gold medal. And can you imagine Cristiano Ronaldo refusing to play for Portugal at soccer’s World Cup?
Baseball? The news leading into this spring’s World Baseball Classic, perhaps the most intriguing major sports event to come on line in decades, is more about the guys, mostly pitchers to be fair, who are turning down invitations to play than it is about the guys who will suit up.
