TAIWAN – The Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) recently held its 2008 New Player Draft which also included a Special Draft for players from the disbanded dmedia T-Rex and Chinatrust Whales franchises.

SPECIAL DRAFT

The Sinon Bulls used the top pick to select former dmedia slugger Chia-Hsien Hsieh who finished second in the league this past season with 17 home runs. The Brother Elephants had the second pick and quickly snapped up ex-Chinatrust ace Fu-Te Ni who led the CPBL with 132 strikeouts in 2008.

With the third selection the La New Bears chose Chih-Yao Chan and the President Lions took Wei-Ming Chu with the fourth and final pick of the first round.

NEW PLAYER DRAFT

The Bulls were unwilling to take a chance on highly-touted pitcher Chin-Hui Tsao whose past arm troubles led the club to take amateur pitcher Ko-Chien Lin with the top pick. However, the Elephants rolled the dice and grabbed Tsao with the second pick.

Although teams wanted to see Tsao’s medical records before drafting the talented hurler, his agency insisted that they will only show the records after the draft which led Sinon to bypass one of Taiwan’s top pitching prospects.

The Bears chose Po-Hsuan Keng with the third pick while the Lions added Ching-Ming Wang with the final selection in the opening round.
