USA – Davey Johnson is expected to be named manager of Team USA for the World Baseball Classic in a
Wednesday press conference at the winter meetings in Las Vegas.
Johnson managed the Mets, Reds, Orioles and Dodgers in a 17-year major league coaching career that ended in 2000. This past summer, he led the U.S. Olympic baseball team to a bronze medal at the Beijing Games.
He will be assisted by former Seattle Mariners skipper Marcel Lachemann (pitching coach) and former major league slugger Reggie Smith (hitting coach).
Team USA finished a dismal 3-3 in the inaugural World Baseball Classic in 2006 with former major leaguer Buck Martinez calling the shots.
