DOMINICAN REPUBLIC - Chicago Cubs slugger Aramis Ramirez has decided to play for the Licey Tigers in the Dominican Winter League to prepare for the 2009 World Baseball Classic in March.

Ramirez told the Associated Press that “I must request the permission of the Cubs to play (in the Dominican baseball), but I believe that it would be a good idea to take advantage of the winter league to put me in form for the Classic.”

The 33-year-old third baseman last suited up for Licey in 2001-02 when he was a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Ramirez, who did not play in the inaugural Classic in 2006, batted .289 this past season with 27 home runs and 111 RBIs. However, the Cubs were swept in the first round of the playoffs by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
