USA – The Pensacola Pelicans announced today that the contract of starting left-handed pitcher Dan Smith
has been sold to the Baltimore Orioles. Smith becomes the twentieth Pelicans player signed by a MLB organization.
Smith signed a split contract between the double-A Bowie Baysox (MD) and the triple-A Norfolk Tides (VA).
“Dan became our best starting pitcher & gave us a chance to win every time he took the mound,” said Pelicans General Manager Talmadge Nunnari. “He’s going to be missed on our staff but he deserves this chance in affiliated ball.”
In 2008, Smith joined the Pelicans mid-season and quickly became a fan favorite. He was a power strikeout pitcher, accumulating seven or more strikeouts in six of his 11 games played, including a 13-strikeout, eight inning performance on August 17. He finished the season 3-3 with a 3.08 ERA and 73 strikeouts in 73 innings pitched. Smith averaged 6.6 strikeouts per outing.
“Dan has a veteran presence and role modeled to the young players the importance of proper physical & mental preparation to complete at a high level,” added Nunnari.
Prior to joining the Pelicans, Smith played in the Atlanta Braves organization for five seasons which included stints with the double-A Mississippi Braves and triple-A Richmond Braves. The Ft. Myers resident boasts a 28-22 career record, 3.02 ERA, and 428 strikeouts compared to only 193 walks in 401 innings pitched. Opposing batters are hitting only .215 against him.
Smith joins David Golliner, Joe Hulett Kyle Middleton, Michael Hyle, Tony Pierce, Carlos Mendoza, Clint Sodowski, Gerardo Casadiego, Rafael Alvarez, Edwar Ramirez, Hunter Vick, Joe Espada, Andy Wilson, Matt Tindell, Josh Kranawetter, Phil Devey, Heath Kelly, Talmadge Nunnari, and Pete Della Ratta as Pelicans players who have signed with MLB teams.
