USA – The Lincoln Saltdogs made their second acquisition of the 2008-2009 offseason on Tuesday,
acquiring right-handed pitcher Chris Cullen from the Reno Silver Sox of the Golden League in exchange for cash considerations. The deal is the second that Lincoln and Reno have completed this offseason.
Cullen has now been traded twice within the past week. He spent the 2008 season with Edmonton in the Golden League, and was acquired by Reno on November 14 in exchange for outfielder (and former Saltdog) Gary Harris.
In his rookie campaign, Cullen went 5-1 for Edmonton with a 3.20 ERA. He made 11 appearances, ten of them starts, and allowed just three home runs in 56.1 innings pitched. Cullen earned his first career complete game on July 25, pitching all seven innings without allowing an earned run to win game one of a doubleheader against Orange County. His best start came on August 6, when he tossed eight scoreless innings to beat Yuma.
The 22-year-old righty made his professional debut for Edmonton in June, after completing a four-year career at Michigan State. Cullen went 5-4 with a 4.95 ERA for the Spartans last spring, making 14 appearances (12 starts) and throwing one complete-game shutout. Signing with Edmonton after college marked a homecoming of sorts for the native Canadian, who grew up in Ontario.
The 2009 season begins on May 14, with the Saltdogs’ home opener scheduled for May 22. For more team information, go to www.saltdogs.com.
