MEXICO – The Mochis Caneros completed a three-game sweep against the Guasave Algodoneros with a 3-1 win on Sunday at the Emilio Ibarra Almada Stadium to claim sole possession of the top spot in the Mexican Pacific League.
Starters Ismael Castillo and Francisco Cordoba locked horns in an impressive pitching duel until Mochis plated a trio of runs in the sixth highlighted by a two-run single from Luis Mauricio Suárez.
Guasave foiled the shutout in the seventh when Tike Redman’s run-scoring double scored Eduardo Arredondo. The Caneros are 8-1 in their last nine outings and have won 11 of 13 to overtake the Algodoneros who rolled into town with a two-game lead.
Castillo tossed 5 2/3 scoreless innings in a strong but no decision effort as Mochis used five pitchers to clinch the series sweep. Reliever Arturo López picked up the win while Dominican closer Jorge Luis Vásquez registered his eighth save.
Cordoba also turned in a stellar outing working five shutout innings before departing. Cecilio Garibaldi suffered the loss for Guasave which trotted six pitchers to the mound in a losing effort.
