DOMINICAN REPUBLIC – Kansas City Royals prospect Kila Ka’aihue slugged a home run and Danilo Sanchez hit a solo blast and knocked in four runs to lead the Escogido Leones past the Orientales Estrellas, 6-1, in Dominican League action.
Sanchez uncorked a two-run shot in the third and added a two-run single in the eighth while Ka’aihue smacked a solo homer in the fifth. Reliever Raul Valdez (1-0) worked two innings out of the bullpen to earn his first win. Royals prospect Dusty Hughes started the game and fanned one in four scoreless innings.
Estrellas reliever Franklin Romero (0-1) was charged with the loss.
Gigantes 9, Azucareros 7
Former Minor Leaguer Juan Brito went 3-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs as the Cibao Gigantes topped the Este Azucareros in Dominican League action this past weekend.
Brito went 3-for-4 and designated hitter Erick Almonte drove in three runs while scoring twice.
Minnesota Twins prospect Julio DePaula tossed 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win while Darío Veras retired the side in order in the ninth to record his first save. Sam Narron (0-1) suffered the setback for the Azucareros.
Licey at Aguilas, postponed, power
The game between the Licey Tigers and the Cibaeñas in Santiago, 150 kilometers to the north of the Dominican capital, was suspended due to problems in two towers of the electrical system at the Cibao Stadium.
